ABOUT EVENING STAR NURSERY AND PRE-PRIMARY SCHOOL
Evening Star Nursery and Pre-Primary School, is a modern, student-centered, and community-rooted educational institution committed to nurturing academic excellence, empowering underprivileged and orphaned children, leadership, and religious and cultural moral values. The school is currently offer nursery section with aim to develop and add more levels, with a vision to provide affordable yet high-quality learning opportunities tailored to the needs of today’s child and the demands of the 21st-century world.
Many of the children we serve come from vulnerable and orphanage households and need support to access education, nutritious meals, and basic healthcare. Our vision is to create a permanent school where every child can learn in a safe and well-equipped environment.
The school will be located in the Central region, Kalungu District, Kyamulibwa council, wave 3, Katerega Ward, Kambulala ‘A’ village, in Uganda, where there is an increasing demand for quality education and low costs of operation due to a growing population estimated to be at 177,200 people in 2012, with a 2014 census indicating a total area of 241,551 square kilometres, shoddy roads, poor infrastructure and limited school capacity, a high rate of poverty and low development compared to other districts that started at the same time, such as Lwengo and Bukomansimbi.
Through Kizito and Barbara Ministries and Evening Star School, 78 children have been able to receive holistic support and child welfare.
68 children out of 78 are under the care of Kizito and Barbara Ministries.
33 children out of 68 are studying at Evening Star School.
25 children out of 68 are studying from other schools that we are cooperating with.
10 children out of 68 are not studying yet. This is because these children are living in Kampala District, and the school is located in Kalungu District, which is very far, and the school hasn’t got the capacity to put up a boarding section.
10 children out of 43 at Evening Star School can only manage to meet school needs; hence, they are coming from families of middle-class income earners.
The total number of children under Kizito and Barbara Ministries is 68; some of them are studying at Evening Star School (33), and others (25) are studying at other schools because some are above nursery level while the school is currently operating a nursery section, and only 10 children haven't got a chance to be in school because they are staying in Kampala District, yet the school is located in Kalungu District (100+ km apart); therefore, our budget limits us from putting all the children in school, yet we are doing our best to ensure that each and every child gets exposure to education.
What we offer to the children:
1. Daily classroom learning.
2. Child welfare and holistic support.
3. Moral and spiritual guidance.
4. Safe and structured learning environment.
5. Emotional support.
Despite limited resources, achievements have been realized in academic progress, attendance, child welfare, and moral development.
Targeted Beneficiaries: Underprivileged and vulnerable children from families facing stricken poverty, lack of educational support, food insecurity, and unstable homes.
Problem Statement.
Over 4 million children in Uganda lack access to quality education due to poverty, social inequality, the result of the death of their parents and guardians, and limited local resources.
Uganda's poor health facilities and infrastructure are one of the major causes of children dropping out from school because of the loss of their parents and guardians. In 2024, Uganda reported 5,144 deaths from road accidents, an average of 14 per day, a figure that has been steadily rising. This represents a significant increase from 4,806 deaths in 2023 and 4,534 in 2022. The most recent global data from the WHO, published in 2020, indicated a death rate of 53.60 per 100,000 people, ranking Uganda sixth worldwide.
HIV/AIDS is also another factor that leads to children suffering and dropping out of school after children lose their parents and guardians. In 2022, there were an estimated 17,000 AIDS-related deaths in Uganda, a significant decrease from 56,000 deaths in 2010. While the number of deaths has fallen, the country still faces a high burden of HIV, with about 1.4 million people living with the virus as of December 2022.
Many families in Uganda survive on less than $2 per day, making school-related costs impossible to afford.
Poor health facilities, infrastructure and HIV/AIDS are some of the major reasons that lead the children to face increased risks of child labour, school dropout, early marriage and exploitation.
Ø Therefore, without early education, these children face limited opportunities for personal development and economic independence.
Ø Without urgent intervention, these children are also deprived of the opportunity to realise their potential and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
Factors that restrict the school from delivering high-quality education"
Shortage of scholastic materials: textbooks, chalks, manilas, reams, printers, photocopiers, exercise books, pencils, colors etc.
Shortage of water: this is because we are getting water from a long distance. We bought a water tank to minimize the shortage, but still we need to construct the tank base and keep fetching water from water wells.
Inadequate teaching staff: The school has 43 children from 3 different classes, i.e., baby, middle, and top class, yet we have only 3 teachers. Sometimes we fail to give enough care to the children, but this is due to limited operating funds.
Limited operating funds: Due to this challenge, the school has failed to meet some of the needs, like having enough teachers, having no supportive staff, not getting food in time, and some teachers coming from far away and they needed to be transported to the school.
Insufficient food support: we only depend on one type of food, posho and beans, which is not good for a studying environment, and on top of that, we only drink porridge for breakfast, which is also not healthy for the children.
Limited classroom resources: The school is currently only operating nursery section I.e., baby, middle, and top class, yet the children from top class are going to be promoted to Primary One next year (2027); therefore, we shall need 2 more classes and more teachers because there will be an increased number of lessons and a Primary Section level.
Financial pressure on daily school operation: Since most of the children can’t meet school necessities, we face a challenge of running a school in a proper way, like paying teachers in time, paying school rent in time, getting food in time, etc.
The school is lacking a kitchen: The school has no school kitchen, and we normally face challenges to prepare breakfast and lunch for the children, especially during the rainy season. We were warned by the school inspector and advised to have a kitchen.
Non-cemented floor: School classroom floors are not cemented, which results in a lot of dust in the classroom, and this causes children to get the flu and other diseases, especially airborne diseases and also plastering the walls.
A challenge of school rent: Due to a lot of children not being able to meet school requirements, we face a challenge of not having school rent in time.
Lack of dinning area: Currently we have no dining area where children can take breakfast from so it is challenging because most of the children found sitting on the bare ground.
Despite these challenges, the ministry and school continue to serve the children faithfully.
